VLC EMPIREThe Very Large Colony Empire
The Empire began as an answer to hunger. During lean seasons, isolated nests watched their stores empty while nearby chambers guarded surpluses they could not safely exchange. The first Imperial colonies opened granaries, joined their trails and pledged soldiers to one another. The Common Scent turned that promise into a way of life: no worker should starve simply because she was born on the wrong side of a root.
Its builders maintain roads that outlast a queen. Its quartermasters move grain through flood and drought. To many ordinary Imperial ants, service means protecting strangers who would otherwise have no one to defend them. Veterans remember relief columns attacked on narrow trails and fragile settlements destroyed while neighbouring councils argued about whose duty it was to help.
But a system built to protect every nest asks much of each one. Distant governors set quotas; local customs give way to common rules. Some citizens believe unity is the only defence against the next famine. Others fear that consent is being replaced by obedience, and that a colony cannot be cared for by refusing to hear it. Imperial soldiers cross the Scentline carrying both that hope and that unresolved question.
